RCOM Gets Pan-India License

DoT on Thursday announced a pan-India GSM licence for Reliance Communications. The company had already paid the requisite licence fee of Rs 1,651 crore for a pan-India GSM licence on October 19, 2007.

The licence will guarantee that RCom will be in queue for GSM spectrum ahead of the 46 others that have applied for licences recently. RCom currently offers telecom services on the CDMA platform in all telecom circles in the country, and, through its 100% subsidiary, also offers GSM services in seven telecom circles.

RCom will now have to wait for DoT to allot 4.4 MHz of GSM spectrum in each of the circles to launch commercial operations. RCom will be allotted spectrum only after existing licence holders—Vodafone, Aircel and Idea—are granted start-up spectrum to launch services and other existing players that have applied for a pan-India licence are allotted both licences and spectrum.

Mobile- Your Personal Advisor

Researchers from the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) has come up with a software called Magitti. It automatically recommends information about "local area" activities, such as shopping and dining, matching the consumer's location, time of day and personal tastes.

Magitti software studies user’s behavior based on his text messages and mobile calendar to come up with more relevant recommendations. Once installed in a GPS-enabled mobile phone, user is not required to surf mobile Internet to search for a good place to eat, movies to watch, or other activities to do.

When a person first opens a phone that has Magitti software, she will instantly see a list of recommendations. If it's noon, the software might suggest local restaurants. If it's 3 P.M., it might recommend a nearby boutique for shopping. If it's 9 P.M., a list of pubs might appear. Over time, these recommendations will change as Magitti learns more about the user's behaviors and preferences.

Mobile Number Portability- Good or Bad for Operators??

The customer is already the king in India's booming telecommunications industry, and announcements about mobile number portability by the government last week are set to ensure that it will remain that way for a long time to come.

It will be a heart-warming change for millions of mobile phone subscribers in the country, when customers will be allowed to switch to a different service provider without having to surrender their existing phone number will be introduced in about a year's time.

But at least some of the service providers in the industry, if not all, will suffer the effects of even more intensified competition, and they could be expected to do everything within their powers to retain customers. In the lead time that they enjoy up to the introduction of the number portability, market leader Bharti Airtel as well as others could be expected to launch new plans to lock-in customers for a certain period of time by offering a sweeter deal.

They will need to make extra efforts to retain their corporate accounts, as well as individual high-billing users, who will undoubtedly be targeted by competitors. Additional investments to improve network reach and service quality will be called for. And costs will inevitably rise, while average revenues per user (ARPU) could remain under pressure in a more competitive environment.

Of the 10 mobile service providers in the industry with at least a million subscribers, the smaller ones such as Spice Communications and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTE) , Aircel, could be at a greater risk than others, as they lack a nationwide footprint

Among the bigger companies, Reliance Communications (RCOM) has the greatest opportunity, but it also faces the biggest threat. Reliance currently offers a majority of its around 40 million customers CDMA services, while the rest of the industry offers mostly GSM services. Reliance has been looking at a far bigger presence in GSM as well, and the introduction of number portability offers it a big opportunity to steal GSM customers from competition. However, it is equally possible that its existing CDMA customers are weaned away by competition, and RCoM will have to constantly watch its back to prevent that from happening.

Number portability, however, needn't be bad news for everyone in the industry. It is a great opportunity for a service provider to differentiate from the rest of the pack by offering a truly superior service that is customized to individual users -- something that few service providers seem to be doing today.

Vodafone Plans to Increase its Presence in China

Vodafone, "the world's largest mobile operator by revenue", has plans to use the government led restructuring of the telecoms market to increase its presence in the country. The Chinese government is planning to shake up the local telecoms market as part of the roll out of 3G in country. And Vodafone intends to use its 3.3% holding in leading carrier, China Mobile, as leverage to extend its reach in the world's largest mobile markets.

Vodafone chief executive, Arun Sarin, is quoted by UK newspaper the Financial Times as saying that that the Big V's $13bn stake in China Mobile could be used to take advantage of local opportunities. One of the likeliest options could potentially see Vodafone exchange its holding in Chain Mobile for a bigger stake another company.

However, it is likely that the allocation of 3G licences in China, whenever that happens, will be the only thing to put an end to the rumours, as it will likely be the catalyst for restructuring. The Beijing Olympics in August of next year are seen to be an attractive even to launch 3G services around.

Handset Popularity Differs in America & India

Survey conducted by ChangeWave Research showed 82% of American users were very satisfied with their iPhone handsets. The results do not represent the general population but they provide a real-time view of business trends well in advance of other available sources.

% of satisifed user for other handsets covered in the ChangeWave survey-

RIM- 52%
Sanyo- 46%
LG- 44%
Nokia and Samsung- 36%
Palm- 35%
Motorola- 33%
Sony Ericsson- 31%

At the same time IDC conducted a mobile phone satisfaction survey in India. Survey results shows Sony Ericsson at top of the list.

  1. Sony Ericsson
  2. Motorola
  3. Nokia

Unfortunately, neither the iPhone or RIM’s Blackberry were included in the Indian study. However, it is strange that those brands with the least satisfaction in the US got top ratings in India.

The different results in the two countries tell us that the surveys reveal as much about the respondents, about the environment, and, perhaps, about the surveys themselves as they tell us about the mobile devices.

Sony-Ericsson mobile phones ranked first on overall satisfaction by users in 2007, while Motorola was ranked as the 'most improved' brand on satisfaction for the last 3 years. According to ‘India Mobile Handset Usage and Satisfaction Study 2007’ conducted by International Data Corporation's, the overall satisfaction among mobile handset users declined. The two features responsible for this decline are Internal memory and entertainment.

Motorola was in the second slot in overall satisfaction, displacing Nokia to the third place, while barring the top three vendors (Sony Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia) all other brands fared below the industry average.

"The mobile handsets with higher memory and good entertainment features are still priced quite high. The entry-level phones are relatively poor on these parametres contributing to decline in satisfaction scores,” IDC India Country Manager Kapil Dev Singh said.

The study pointed out 3 main features that drive users to upgrade their handsets-

  • Integrated digital camera
  • Music player
  • Stereo FM radio
These features are available in mid-range and high-end handsets so far, but the common user now demands these features in the more affordable handsets.

Google Bought Jaiku

Web giant Google bought Jaiku, a Helsinki-based presence sharing service. Jaiku is a micro social network, much like Twitter. Users have options to update their status and location and broadcast this info to the rest of the community.

On a Symbian S60 handset, Jaiku Mobile integrates with the address book, allowing the user to view the latest Jaiku status updates and presence of their friends direct from the contact list. Jaiku users can not only share their availability but also their location and calendar, which obviously gives Google a hook into the location based advertising space.

India's Mobile Network Capacity Not Able to Match Growing Subscriber Needs

An analysis by Crisil Research reveals that the number of base stations installed by Indian mobile service providers is not sufficient enough to provide high-quality services to the rapidly growing population of Indian subscribers.

Indian subscribers, on an average, talk 50% more than those in the rest of the world - the average minutes of use (MoU) in India is around 1.5 times the world average. However, the number of base transceiver stations (base stations) per million subscribers in India is only 25% higher than the global average. Base station inadequacy is one of the key causes of poor quality of service such as network congestion, call drops, and poor voice quality.

Although network traffic has grown exponentially in India over the last two years - an annual subscriber growth of 73% and an annual 17% growth in average minutes of use (MoU) - operators have continued to focus on rolling out networks in newer areas over augmenting the capacity of existing networks.Regulator needs to expand their focus exclusively from increasing coverage to promoting a balance between increasing coverage and improving QoS in covered.

Rescue for Bangalore City Using Cellphone Technology

Have you ever been to Bangalore? If yes, you must be well aware of traffic situation there. To alleviate people's traffic problems, Bangalore Traffic Police, Mapunity (developer of geographic information systems and services) and Airtel have come up with an urban traffic information system known as Bangalore Transport Information System (BTIS) using cell phone technology.

With BTIS (lunched last June), real-time traffic information is generated from the cell phone tower logs of Airtel's city-wide network, and made available to commuters to see live congestion hotspots, find directions and plan their travel routes. The entire information system is available through SMS to Airtel customers using a shortcode and to others by dialing a ten-digit number. This live traffic information system is the first of its kind in India. It addresses the growing need of traffic administrators for centralized traffic monitoring and control infrastructure.

Happy Birthday GSM!!

Twenty years ago today 7th Sept, an historic agreement was signed in Copenhagen by 15 telecommunications operators from 13 countries that led to the development of the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), and a mobile communications industry that today serves more than 2.5 billion people across 218 countries.

GSM - originally known as Groupe Special Mobile was designed to provide a single mobile phone standard within Europe to replace the multiple of incompatible analogue systems in use at the time. It was ironically, never designed as a global system from the outset, but was later adopted by other countries, initially Australia's Telstra for their phone systems and eventually the Groupe Special Mobile became the Global System for Mobile Communications.

In 1989, GSM responsibility was transferred to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and phase I of the GSM specifications were published in 1990.

The first GSM network was launched in 1991 by Radiolinja in Finland with joint technical infrastructure maintenance from Ericsson. It was in June 1992 that the first roaming agreement was signed between Telecom Finland and Vodafone in the UK.

The first US based GSM network was launched later in November 1995, on the GSM1900 band by American Personal Communications - trading as Sprint Spectrum, and was initially 49% (later 100%) owned by Sprint which later launched a national CDMA network, abandoning its early GSM heritage in 1999.

Today, the GSM family of technologies makes up 85% of the global mobile services market, which accounts for about 1.6% of global GDP. Each year, mobile users purchase more than one billion new handsets, make more than 7 trillion minutes of calls and send about 2.5 trillion text messages.
