iPhone In India Soon

Apple is launching the iPhone in the US tomorrow. Officially, it will not be available in India for at least another year. But for those who really want it, the wait might be as short as a fortnight or, at the most, a month. In the US, Apple has tied up with AT&T in an exclusive contract. This means that the iPhone will only work on an AT&T SIM card for which buyers have to sign up for an $59 to $100 a month plan for a minimum two-year subscription.

But in India, grey market operators say they can “unlock” the phone for just Rs 1,000 or Rs 1,500 so that it can be used on any network in India.Out in the grey markets of Palika Bazar or Sarojini Nagar, an entry-level iPhone will be available for Rs 30,000.

SMS 2.0

Mobile users would soon be able to send coloured messages and fun emotions from their mobile phones at no additional cost. UK-based mobile solutions maker Affle is coming to India with next generation messaging application SMS 2.0

The application also allows users to schedule SMSes, send SMS to e-mail, send graphic and multimedia attachments, access Internet and get updates on discounts and promotions from advertisers. The default content stays at the bottom portion of the screen and converts to full screen when either the message is sent or the consumer clicks on the content.

Bharti has been running this service on pilot basis since June 1. Initially, the service will be available only on some GPRS-enabled Nokia phones.

Mobile Phone- A Fashion Statement?

British men are more likely to use their mobile phone for work related tasks while women are more likely to use it to stay in touch with their family, concludes an independent survey produced by online mobile phone retailer mPhone.

Mobile phones as ----------Women (%) ------Men (%)
Primary tool of work ---------7.7----------------- 28
Stay in touch with family -----50 -----------------35
Social life organisor -----------23.6 ---------------24.1
Fashion Item -----------------Less than1---------2.4

As a result, this survey doesn't show that women don't use phones for work, or that men use phones only for business. More interestingly, it indicates the attitude each gender has towards a tool that can be used in many, many ways.

India to Become Handset Super Power

Low mobile penetration and favourable government policies are driving mobile phone manufacturers to set up manufacturing facilities in India.

Apart from being the world’s fastest growing telecom market, India is also emerging as a handset super-power as more manufacturers set up base in the country. Nokia started its unit in Chennai in January 2006 and produced a record 25 million handsets in the first year of operation. The vendor is also exporting mobiles from India to Sri Lanka.

Motorola and electronics manufacturing service vendors (EMS) like Foxconn and Flextronics have also set up plants in India. India is expected to register a handset production of over 51 million units this year to record the highest growth in the Asia-Pacific region.

Mobile Tracking System

Mumbai-based Micro Technologies India Ltd has developed a lost-mobile tracking system. Next time you lose your mobile phone you could actually get to know not only the location of the handset but also the mobile number of the person using your handset.

The application works on GSM technology. The software, which is loaded into the user's mobile phone, in the event of a theft or the handset getting misplaced, informs the user about the new mobile number with the current location of the handset through an SMS alert along with an e-mail to the original user's email address.

To begin with, the company has agreed to offer the technology to Bharti Airtel in Delhi.
