Bus Routes on SMS

The Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC), is soon launching bus timetable on SMS. The project is being developed by an Ahmedabad-based software company. GSRTC would be the first among all state transport undertakings in the country to offer such SMS services to passengers.

The SMS services include the schedule of

  • next bus services
  • luxury bus services
  • five buses
  • next five buses

Yeah, seems like a good service however it becomes killer when you are able to give real time data .
Eg. I am having breakfast and I sms bus route number i want to take. SO i Get a real time response that the bus no abc is 7 minutes away from my bus stand. ( How this happens is that the network knows where I am at the time of sending the sms - that data is sent alongwith my query to get the result of the bus that is closest and approaching me - buses too need to be on a central GPS system for that)

As I understand, this service is kind of Bus timing schedule not how much time will it take for a particular bus to reach at bus stop user is at right now. If I am standing at barakhamba bus stop & want to know about white line service to nehru place then by sending SMS I will get time schedule (11am, 12pm, 1pm.. so n so forth... )for White line starting from its original point (new delhi railway station) not that bus will be reaching in 5 min to barkhamba bus stand. You are very right in saying that there needs to be a GPS in buses if we need exact time a bus will reach on particular bus stand.

Oh hello...???? What technology can help you predict traffic??? Without that every response you get will be questionable.

ITS called GPS technology - and it doesnt predict traffic it tells you exact time and volume of traffic. The only thing it doesnt factor in is the possibility of an accident however the moment there is an accident it monitors that and reflects it in its results.

aagey badho - chalo chalo aagey badho. GPS does not (because it cannot) give volume of traffic. i would like to know your source of information on this front.

We would like to add that the real time information as requested is also planned. We have worked out solution without GPS, which is based on other technology mix like RFID/CellId beside GPS. The system has 99% precission as there are always dependencies onlocation factor. Once sender location is also tied to GPS and route mapping is done 100% than only 100% accurate results can be drawn. Rest all will be based on some statistics.
